Televised speech given by Ronald Reagan, who was the host of the television show "GE Theater" at the time, as a paid political advertisement on behalf of Barry Goldwater, the 1964 Republican candidate for president. It aired on the NBC network on Oct. 27, 1964. The speech, which was essentially the same one Reagan had been giving to local California groups for several months, propelled him to prominence on the national political stage. In it, Reagan told of his recent conversion from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party. He emphasized his opposition to big government and high taxes, and his belief in the need for a strong national defense against Communism. He blasted the "Great Society" programs of President Lyndon B. Johnson and decried what he perceived as a trend toward socialism and Communist appeasement among leading Democrats. He concluded by calling on Americans to stand up against the threats posed by liberalism and to vote for Goldwater.
