Study Guide for Golden, "The World of the Steppes"
Peter Golden, who studied Turkish and Turkic history at Columbia University
in the 1960s, teaches at Rutgers University, where he recently served as
Chairperson of the History Department.
This chapter comes from his recent "survey" of the history
of the Turkic peoples. While it is a "survey", it uncharacteristically
also includes several interesting and novel "theses."
- 1. How was the nomadic world different from the settled world?
- 2. What does Golden mean by "ethnic processes?"
- 3. How does Golden explain the spread of the Turks?
